In case you missed it, my column that appeared in Thursday’s Go! section of the Monterey Herald this week included a whirlwind tour of local taquerias, including Taqueria del Mar, a favorite among vegetarians. I’ll be reposting my reviews and stories from my weekly column for the Herald here on my blog along with extra photos that didn’t appear in print.
Vegetarians and vegans often lament the limited options when it comes to meatless Mexican meals. Taqueria del Mar is far more accommodating than most other taco shops — they don’t use any animal fats in cooking.
The artichoke taco ($4.49), with grilled artichokes, cabbage, pico de gallo and dill sauce, comes topped with avocado too, making for a vegetarian feast.
Sure, that taco cost about double that of other local taquerias, but I was happy to overlook the price considering it came with a heaping portion of veggies. (And let’s face it, $5 is still a pretty good deal for lunch.)
My only complaint was the use of flour tortillas — I prefer my tacos prepared with a traditional corn tortilla instead.
Taqueria del Mar is at 530 Lighthouse Ave. in Monterey. 372-7887. www.yelp.com/biz/taqueria-del-mar-monterey.
