Taco time, part 3

In case you missed it, my column that appeared in Thursday’s Go! section of the Monterey Herald this week included a whirlwind tour of local taquerias, including Papa Chevo’s Taco Shop. I’ll be reposting my reviews and stories from my weekly column for the Herald here on my blog along with extra photos that didn’t appear in print.

Papa Chevo’s Taco Shop has a cult following around town.

Tucked away next door to Adventures by the Sea, this taco shop has a bit of a cult following among locals for cheap eats. The shop is bustling every time I’m there. The burritos may be the most popular, but it’s the tacos that get my mouth watering.

The adobada taco was so flavorful, with tender pork meat.

The adobada taco ($2.29) is made with spicy marinated pork, much like al pastor. The marinade gave the tender meat a tangy kick, with red chile adobo and vinegar. A dollop of guacamole on top tames the heat.

The carnitas taco is quite possibly the best one in town. They’re crispy and buttery!

And after my recent taco tasting, I’m about ready to declare the carnitas taco ($2.29) the best in town. The carnitas were crispy outside, tender and fatty inside.
