For those of you who missed my column in Thursday’s Go! section of the Monterey Herald, I’m reposting the stories here on my blog. Check out this week’s Best Bite–a recap of the week’s tastiest treat! As an added bonus, check out some extra tasty bites I found this week dining around town.
Best bite: Grilled prawns with paella rice from the Babaloo Truck (mobile)
Last Thursday’s Independent Marketplace may have celebrated Americana, but when dinnertime rolled around, I found myself craving something cubano instead. I joined the queue of hungry foodies at the Babaloo truck.
I ordered the day’s special — grilled prawns over paella rice ($12).
The prawns were cooked perfectly, impressive considering how rare it is to find shellfish cooked properly in restaurants with full kitchens, much less on a food truck.
Seasoned with saffron, the paella rice was the perfect accompaniment for those succulent shrimp.
The Babaloo Truck is at the Old Monterey Farmers Market on Tuesdays. Visit www.babalootruck.com for additional stops.
Poached pear and almond tart from Cafe Lumiere (Monterey)
Before heading into the movie at the Osio Cinemas, I picked up a sweet treat from Cafe Lumiere’s pastry case to sustain me through the movie. It was Cirilo’s poached pear and almond tart that caught my eye this time.
The pears were so tender, laid on top of a layer of sweet almond cream and topped with some fresh, housemade whipped cream.
The movie wasn’t so hot in the end, but that dessert was divine!
Cafe Lumiere is at 365 Calle Principal in Monterey. 831-920-2451. www.montereylumiere.com.
