Chill out!

In case you missed it, here is my roundup of local spots for ice-cold desserts that appeared in Thursday’s Go! section of the Monterey Herald. I’ll be reposting my reviews and stories from my weekly column for the Herald here on my blog along with extra photos that didn’t appear in print.

A Plus may be billed as a water shop, but they’ve also got a case full of Marianne’s ice cream.

Ice cream is probably the quintessential summertime treat. There’s nothing better than an ice-cold dessert on a sunny summer day.

Salumeria Luca has a case filled with colorful flavors of gelato and sorbetto.

Around here, my favorite ice cream shop is A Plus (Marina), with more than a dozen flavors of Marianne’s ice cream on the menu. Salumeria Luca (Carmel) also boasts a good selection of housemade gelato and sorbets if you’d prefer a fix closer to home.

New hotspot 400 Degrees Gourmet Burgers and Fries (Carmel) offers housemade ice cream, available by the scoop or blended into a milkshake. Flavors include Madagascar vanilla bean, milk chocolate, strawberry and salted caramel.

If you want something a little healthier, check out Pinkberry’s selection of frozen yogurt.

If you’re looking for something a little lighter, Pinkberry (Monterey) offers tart frozen yogurt that’s packed with good-for-you yogurt cultures. My favorite right now? Strawberry. I usually add a touch of balsamic syrup or a light drizzle of honey.
