Best Bite: January 4

For those of you who missed my column in Thursday’s Go! section of the Monterey Herald, I’m reposting the stories here on my blog. Check out this week’s Best Bite–a recap of the week’s tastiest treats!

When my friend came to town for the New Year’s festivities, we braved Carmel crowds to get together for lunch at Carmel Belle.

In my mission to sample the entire menu, I skipped my usual and decided to try the autumn salad special, with persimmons, pomegranate seeds, goat cheese and walnuts — a combination of some of the best flavors of the fall harvest.

The autumn salad was vibrant in both color and flavor.

The salad was a sight to behold, with slices of pale orange persimmons and chunks of white goat cheese, sprinkled heavily with brilliant red pomegranate seeds.

The crunch of the pomegranate seeds also provided a nice contrast in textures, plus each bite added a tiny burst of flavor from lightly tart, yet sweet, pomegranate juice.
