Cupcakes are once again becoming the “it” dessert around town. Over in Salinas, mobile vendor Fluff Cupcakes is poised to open its permanent storefront this weekend.
Closer to home, Mrs. DeLish’s Cupcake Boutique (Monterey) recently hired a new pastry chef who promises some exciting new menu additions.
Pastries and Petals (Carmel) has brought a couple favorites back for the fall. Pumpkin cupcakes are on the menu now, and gingerbread cupcakes are coming soon!
Those gingerbread cupcakes take the cake in my book. (OK, bad pun.) They’re the perfect blend of sweet and spicy, topped with rich cream cheese frosting.
Layers Sensational Cakes (Monterey) is probably more famous for their cake business, but did you know they’ve tapped into the cupcake trend too? Their pastry case features cupcakes, as well as “babycakes” (cupcakes frosted, then covered in chocolate). The consistency of the cake is so fluffy — though sometimes a little too moist for my tastes.
One of my friends shuttles cupcakes for me from A Piece of Cake truck (Salinas). This past week, I sampled the s’mores and red velvet cupcakes. The cake is dense, yet still light, and they’ve got a good diversity of flavors announced daily via Facebook.
